Instead, it soon became a prison for high-profile political prisoners, starting with Alexey, the son of Peter I the Great. In 1872, a new prison within the walls of the Trubetskoy Bastion was built and over the next forty years, it held thousands of prisoners who were considered enemies of the State.

Its main attractions are the Grand Hall, the opulent  Amber Room, which is lined with gilded amber wall panels and ornate furniture, and the 1,400-acre (566-hectare) Catherine Park with its masterful landscaping.

Kronstadt is situated on the island Kotlin in the middle of the Gulf of Finland. It’s a town and a fortress at the same time but not just an ordinary fortress – to be exact, it’s a unique fortification system consisting of one big fortress and 21 small forts, the majority of which are built on small artificial islands. Previously it was the only way to get to Kronstadt. Now after the dam was built, we can drive there using the the dam. Riding  from the north, it will be almost a 20 km drive through the Gulf of Finland. Whatever the weather is, the sea view is always fantastic! If you come from the south, the way through the Gulf will be almost two times shorter and a part of it will go through a tunnel under the Gulf. So it could be even more exciting! Our guide will tell you about the Gulf of Finland, St. Petersburg floods which used to be so dangerous and destructive, and the dam construction.
From may till october in condition of good weather you can take the boat to reach the island. The journey begins from the pier in the historical center of St. Petersburg. Than the boat proceed to Kotlin Island along the river Neva and across the Golf of Finland. You will see the fantasics view to all over the city from the marie gate and the Kronsand Dam.
There you will visit the Kronstadt Naval Cathedral. It’s so beautiful that even if it was the only one attraction in the whole Kronstadt, it would still be worth to drive there. The Cathedral was built in the very beginning of the 20th century after St. Sophia in Constantinople. The huge dome of it could be easily seen from Peterhof and in good weather even from St. Petersburg. This very dome is covered not with gold as majority of other domes but with silver and decorated with golden anchors on silver plates. The interior of the Cathedral is just astonishing: numerous mosaics, different marbles and stain glass panels. On the walls of the cathedral you will find stone plates with names seamen who perished when in service.

Historical theatrical scale model Petrovskaya Akvatoria – is the story of the Northern capital and the creation of the Russian fleet in an interactive miniature. Spit of Vasilyevsky Island without Rostral Columns, Menshikov’s homestead instead SPBGU, the first port of St. Petersburg, Masquerade in Peterhof, old fortress in Oranienbaum, which no longer exists,-  hard to imagine, but now you can see it with your own eyes! Here one can find recreated ancient estates, parks, palaces … The main feature of the scale model is a real water area, symbolizing the Neva’s aquatory and the Gulf of Finland with models of the ships of the Petrine era float on water. But the reconstruction of the architectural ensembles and landscape is not the main point of the exhibit. It is only the decoration, that unfolds a picture of life in the city in the time of the great Russian emperors from Peter the Ist till Catherine the IInd. The moving objects (figures of people, carriages, ships), light, sound and visual effects can reproduce the change of the day and night, as well as the changes in weather’s conditions. Different scenarios of the theatrical actions is turned on according to the timetable by pressing special buttons. It brings the additional interaction to the exhibit.
